Anyone who has been to Spruce Nail Shop in Over-the-Rhine knows that the experience is unlike anything else. Between the upbeat and personable staff, the natural products, and the salon’s overall inviting aesthetic, it’s a downright fun place to be.
Now, owner and nail technician Molly Reckman Nagle is taking her dream even further by bringing Spruce’s good, clean fun right to your doorstep, thanks to the shop’s new baby blue 1988 Volkswagen van.
“This mobile version is something I’ve always envisioned as part of Spruce from the beginning,” Reckman Nagle says. “When we first opened Spruce, we had five or six of us; growth hit us really fast, and we’ve focused on things in-shop. This year we’ve really been able to take a look at how we can expand outside of Spruce.”
Why launch a mobile arm after years of fielding inquiries about opening a second brick and mortar? “So many other services, like hair and makeup, have always been brought into people’s homes, especially for things like the day of the wedding. Nails has always been something you’ve had to go to the salon to do,” Reckman Nagle says.
After realizing that Thursday and Friday nights filled up with bridal parties, which typically stay at the shop for a longer period of time, sending nail technicians to clients’ homes or events seemed like the best way to keep both the neighborhood and bigger parties—especially already-stressed brides—happy.
Agnes Burdsall, Spruce’s communication and events manager, knows firsthand how stressful a bridal party’s salon experience can be. “The first time I came to Spruce was for my own wedding party. I was so excited. I’d followed them for forever on Instagram, and I’d never gotten my nails done before.” It turns out, her mom was an hour late to that appointment. Now, through coordinating events for Spruce and its mobile service, Burdsall says she enjoys easing the stress for brides and large groups organizing nail appointments. “There’s always something that happens with a bridal party, and I get it, I’ve been there.”
Worried the mobile version won’t live up to Spruce’s in-shop experience? Don’t be. The mobile services are a waterless and shortened version of what’s offered in the salon (think Spruce’s quickie mani and pedi), but nail art is still readily available, and the two technicians who travel with the mobile service have been with Spruce since the beginning.
The best part? Spruce’s mobile service isn’t just for brides-to-be. It’s also available for corporate events and is a surefire way to add an elegant touch to any party. All said, your nails are in good hands.
