The new canned cocktail was developed using Mazunte’s classic margarita recipe, using Karrikin’s Blaze, which is fermented and distilled locally from 100 percent Blue Weber agave nectar imported from Jalisco, Mexico. It also features Karrikin’s homemade Triple Sec.

“We had been discussing and exploring the best way to grow our brand by finding a way to offer our margarita outside of our brick-and-mortar locations,” says John Johnston, chief financial officer of Mazunte Taqueria, Mazunte Centro, and Mazunte Catering. “This is difficult with us not being a distiller or alcohol distributor.”

Enter Jeff Hunt from Karrikin. The Fairfax-based craft distillery’s cofounder, Johnston, and Josh Wamsley, Mazunte’s chief executive officer, put their heads together to bring the product to fruition. The result is an elevated product with better ingredients, Johnston notes.

“We hope this product is an extension of our brand through retail outlets with a new product offering to our current and new customers,” he adds. “[And] the nice part for them is they have an immediate large customer in us with our two restaurant locations.”

The canned margarita will be sold as a four pack of 12-ounce cans for a suggested retail price of $13.99. Karrikin and Ohio Valley Wine & Beer will act as distributors to retail outlets.

You can celebrate the release with the Mazunte crew this weekend during a release party from 2 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Karrikin Spirits (3717 Jonlen Dr., Fairfax). In addition, Mazunte will have a pop-up “mercado” for guests to take home tostada chips, salsas, guacamole, meats, and produce.
