From middle school talent show to performing at Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, Hot Dog Harv (a.k.a. Harvey H.) is a hot commodity. We talked to the 11 year old about his inspirations, his songwriting, and what food is next on his list for a parody.
What’s your name?
I’m Harvey! Or as some call me, Hot Dog Harv.
How old are you?
I am 11, going on 12, if the Lord lets me see it!
What grade are you in?
I’m in sixth grade! My favorite subject is science! I’m honestly hoping to be an astrobiologist when I grow up.
You named yourself after hot dogs. I take it that’s your favorite food? Is that why you chose the moniker?
Hot dogs aren’t my all-time favorite, but I love them! It’s like wherever hot dogs are, fun is there!
If hot dogs aren’t your favorite food, what is?
Probably spaghetti, or some other types of pasta, like penne.
What made you want to write food-related parodies?
Honestly? It’s mostly because it’s always fun to rave about different foods. It’s even more fun in song form!
How did you get started writing songs?
My older sister was always listening to Chappell Roan. So, to mess with her, I would sing her songs with the words changed. I have always liked to change the words in songs to make them funnier.
Who are your inspirations when it comes to songwriting and why?
Weird Al! He’s just so funny and I love that he’s willing to be silly. It takes a lot of courage to be silly in front of others, and I think he’s so cool. I also like Jon Bellion. His music is so catchy, and he has his own style that sounds really neato.
You went viral last summer with “Cheese Coney Club.” Have you been trying to top that success when you write new songs or are you just trying not to think about it when you write?
Actually, my first parody was “Hot Dogs to Go!” and that went viral after my school talent show. “Cheese Coney Club” was the one that became a hometown hit in Cincinnati. But when I write songs, I’m usually just trying to see what sounds funny.
You’ve had some fun experiences since starting this songwriting adventure. What’s your favorite experience so far?
My fave experience…ooh! Last summer, I got to ride in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. It was so cool that it was a surprise. I had no idea they were coming, and the drivers were so fun and friendly.
You’ve written odes to Skyline and Graeter’s. What’s next?
I’m not sure yet. My sister wants it to be about Taco Bell, so maybe I’ll write a taco song!
