This weekend is packed to the gills with festivals, concerts, conventions, games, and any other possible event you can imagine. Add in the start of spooky season and Oktoberfest season (your Oktoberfest event guide can be found here) and you’ll be booked for three solid days. Here are some of this weekend’s events.
The 8th Street Garlic Festival
Garlic lovers are in for a treat at this downtown food festival. Arnold’s, Crown Republic, Rosie’s Italian, Silverglades, Voodoo Brewery, and Crown Cantina will be serving up lunch and dinner dishes featuring the tasty bulb. From garlic cocktails to garlic entrées and even garlic desserts, 8th Street won’t be short on strong flavors. Thursday, September 12-Saturday, September 14, 11 a.m., 8th St., downtown
UnderWorld Black Arts Festival
The community-based project uplifting Black voices in the arts is returning to the CAC for a full day of programming. Starting at 10 a.m., the Black History 101 Mobile Museum will be set up in the lobby displaying a collection of curated object from Black musicians. The film festival will take place in the Black Box with screenings at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and tickets cost five dollars. The UBAF Dance Party will conclude the day with performances by DJ Kenny Parker, Nasty Nati Brass Band, and DJ Apryl Reign. Registration for the party costs $15 and includes food. Everyone’s favorite murderous monster rock band (pictured above) is stopping in Cincinnati for their Age of Entitlement Tour. Join the Scumdogs—The Berserker Blóthar, BälSäc, Beefcake, JiZMak da Gusha, and Pustulus Maximus—for a night of heavy metal music, elaborate costuming, and gore. You may even witness a battle between the band and their arch nemsis SawBorg Destructo. Friday, September 13, 7 p.m., Bogart’s, 2621 Short Vine St., Corryville
Whispering Beard Folk Festival
A weekend of outdoor togetherness and chill folk vibes await you at Whispering Beard. The two day lineup is filled with folky favorites like Maria Carelli, Yousra, and The Tillers. This year, the festival is implementing a Zero Waste Initiative with reusable dish ware, recycling, and compost for food waste. Dent Schoolhouse Opening Weekend
One of Cincinnati’s best scare attractions is opening back up for Halloween. The haunted school is welcoming fearless visitors back into its halls to witness the terrifying tale of murderous janitor Charles McFree. Dent also offers lights out tours, lights on tours, ghost tours, and behind the scenes tours throughout the season. After getting spooked, head outside to the Monster Midway for a jack o’lantern showcase, haunted house museum, axe-throwing, and fall treats like donuts and cider. Some of the biggest names in horror media will be at the Sharonville Convention Center for the fall HorrorHound convention. In addition to the independent film festival, cosplay contest, vendor floor, and tattoo artist alley, there will be plenty of panels and meet and greets to attend. Guests include Robert Englund, Kevin Smith, Heather Langenkamp, Cole Sprouse, Skeet Ulrich, Melissa Barerra, Tony Revolori, Katheryn Newton, and more. Popular standup comedian Ronny Chieng, best known for his work on The Daily Show, will be performing at the Taft Theatre. Chieng’s brand of political humor has taken him around the world selling out shows in Los Angeles and New York and landing him in major movies like Crazy Rich Asians and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The big rivalry match between FCC and Columbus Crew is back and spicier than ever. Hoping to finish a season sweep against The Crew, FCC will be going into the game looking for both victory and revenge for last year’s Eastern Conference Final. As always, there will be special Hell is Real food on offer like spicy chorizo nachos, chili lime popcorn, Korean corndogs, and more. Celebrate the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month at the fourth annual festival in Sharon Woods. There are activities for all ages from crafts to cultural exhibitions to live music. Entertainment will be provided by Tropicoso, Cincinnati Baila, and Salsannati. There will also be food for purchase from The Arepa Place, El Cardenal Taqueria, Sabor Alaniz, and Frios Pops.
