Far be it from me to ignore desserts, so when 3 Sweet Girls Cakery (formerly known as Cupcake Crazy) announced they were setting up shop in Over-the-Rhine, I was ready. The bakery, known for artful cake pops, decorated cookies, and creative cupcakes, has been creating goodies for weddings and events since its start as a home-based business in 2010.
While the original Kenwood-area location still serves as the bakery and place for special order pickups, the OTR storefront is focused on retail—which means there’s a daily selection of eight cupcake flavors, 15 types of cake pops, decorated cookies, cake push-ups, cupcakes in a jar, chocolate covered Oreos, pretzels, and peanut butter graham crackers, plus homemade dog treats and pupcakes for Fido. If you’re in need of a caffeine fix with your sugar rush (maybe you should slow down?), they sell locally roasted coffee and other beverages as well.
After weeks of walking past the storefront and furtively peeking in the window, I finally caved and stepped inside. Surrounded by the pastel walls and candy colored drawings created by the mother-and-daughters team, the shop itself felt like a giant frosted cake. I hemmed and hawed for a bit before deciding on a salted caramel cheesecake cupcake, AKA the turducken of baked goods. Cheesecake, candy, and frosted cake? Sign me up.
3 Sweet Girls’ cutesy storefront—appropriately located next to the Ice Cream Daydream Artworks mural—adds a welcome touch of sweetness to hipster-fied OTR. Could a full-on dessert bar (anyone? Bueller?) be far behind?
