Pete and Miranda Ventura, the couple behind Birdies Coffee Co. in Norwood, share not only a deep love for each other but also a fervent passion for travel and exceptional coffee. Pete’s family heritage traces back to the picturesque island of Sicily, renowned for its warm hospitality and rich coffee culture. It was their journey to Sicily eight years ago that laid the foundation for their new venture.

During the trip, the Venturas found themselves enchanted by a local bar’s authentic atmosphere. There, friendships were forged over cups of coffee, and they experienced firsthand the joy of simple pleasures. “We loved it so much that Miranda is now studying Italian”, Pete explains.

In the last few years, the couple set plans into motion to create their own local gathering spot, similar to what they felt in Italy. They set about transforming the former Ted’s Pawn into a neighborhood haven.

“When we bought this property, we weren’t sure what is going to be,” says Pete, who grew up three blocks from the pawn shop, where he used to trade baseball cards in his youth. “But we listened to the community, and they were saying a coffee shop would be a great choice.”

Now, Birdies—which earlier opened this month—is filled with natural light, offering patrons an inviting ambiance, a stark contrast to its past life in a windowless space. The single front window now bathes the interior in a soft, comforting glow.

The interior features plush velvety chairs and couches, which encourages customers to linger, and includes a nod to the Venturas’ family-friendly vision with a small children’s table and chairs tucked away in one corner.

OCTOBER 2023Named for Miranda’s grandfather’s lovebird tattoos, the coffee shop takes pride in its dedication to all things local. The coffee served is sourced from La Terza Artisan Coffee Roasterie, and the muffins, bagels, gelato, and delectable jams also originate from various suppliers around the city. And customers will be able to grab a cup of affogato (Italian coffee–based dessert) as well as build-your-own specialty drinks with a selection of flavored syrups.

One of Birdies’ most captivating features is Miranda’s curated gallery wall. Adorning this gallery are photographs that offer a glimpse into the Venturas’ travels and cherished family moments, including images of their grandparents. It’s a testament to the café’s commitment to not just providing a great cup of coffee, but also a space that shares the Venturas’ love for culture, community, and connection. “I want people to come in here, look at the wall and get inspired to travel,” Miranda says.

It isn’t just about creating a cozy interior; it aims to embrace the great outdoors as well. The Venturas have plans to place tables along the outside wall, offering patrons a front-row view of the neighborhood’s comings and goings. For those who prefer fresh air with their fresh brew, an open patio above the shop awaits.

“There are so many families who are moving to this neighborhood [and] you can see so many strollers on the street,” Miranda says. “We want this to be a cozy, neighborhood spot.”
