Muriel “Joan” Woods and Jim Beiting’s love story started simply enough. Having both grown up in Northern Kentucky, the two met while hanging out at the local public pool. On August 28, 1954, they said “I do” at St. Bernard Church in Dayton, Kentucky, kicking off 47 years of marriage, family, and happiness together, until Joan’s passing in 2002.

Both Joan and Jim had 10 siblings, so their reception at the church was a packed event full of dancing and celebration. While away on their honeymoon, some of their siblings snuck into their house, rearranged the furniture, and even put dried beans under their bedsheets for a humorous surprise upon the newlyweds’ return. The couple raised their seven children in Northern Kentucky, where Joan worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Jim was a bricklayer.
