Brunch Report: Otto’s Mainstrasse

As far as tucked away little neighborhood brunch spots go, Otto’s has always been one of my favorites. From its Crayola-inspired color scheme and eclectic salt and pepper shaker collection (I profess a random weakness for kitsch involving chickens) to its revolving work by local artists, the place oozes quirky charm and dishes up some consistently flavorful food. The eggy breakfast casserole is a manly favorite, studded with sausage, potatoes, red pepper, spinach, and mushrooms, and can be garnished with an order of goetta for maximum fuel efficiency. And while the crab hash—think crab cakes mashed with home fries—is a balanced and effective contender, it’s the smoked salmon sandwich that nails it every time. Lest you think I survive on smoked salmon alone (alright, it is in fact a pretty major food group for me), Otto’s version has to be the best smoked salmon bagel set up outside a Jewish-owned deli in this town. Seriously. While the whipped cream cheese is a hefty schmear, for $10, you’ll be met with at least five ounces of Scottish smoked salmon, thin slices of red onion, capers, fresh dill, cucumber and boiled egg slices. Get the side of fruit and consider yourself sated until late afternoon. They’re not messing around.
