Marietta’s worth a trip unto itself, and whether you get there via the river-way or the highway, get there for the River, Trails, and Ales Festival. Now in its fifth year, they keep things laid back: You don’t have to register for anything in advance, most events are free, you can do them with the group or on your own, and there’s something for all levels of adventurer. Plus, there’s a beer festival! Rent a bike (there are mountain and road events) or a kayak from Marietta Adventure Company (book ahead, they get busy) or BYO. “It’s really about exploring the whole greater Marietta area by bicycle, boat, or foot,” says festival director Hallie Taylor. “It highlights resources that are available here year-round.”
