The local shop owners we styled and interviewed for the September issue showed off a few of our favorite Fall fashion and beauty trends. We asked hair stylist Vivian Moore and makeup artist Phillip Saunders how they achieved each lady’s look, and got the lowdown on their favorite products and techniques:
For Gloria McConnaghy, founder and former owner of The Little Mahatma
Vivian: Get the most shine for any smooth short hairstyle by applying Oribe Gel Serum or other styling gel, then comb smooth and air dry. Spray a light mist of Bumble and Bumble Shine Spray into your brush before brushing for extra gloss and shine.
Phillip: For Gloria’s complexion I used NARS powder foundation in Deauville for a soft, even, matte finish. We used NARS lip liner in Jungle Red over the entire lip first and then applied NARS Heat Wave Semi- Matte Lipstick over it to create long- lasting vivid color that retains its shape.
For Shawna Maria Guip, owner of Hi-Bred
Vivian: For Shawna Maria’s side braid, I applied Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray all over to dry hair. Using this before loosely braiding will give any braided style just the right amount of texture, which makes the look more modern and helps it stay in longer. For extra softness, pull and tug gently on your braid to loosen it a little.
Phillip: I enhanced Shawna Maria’s beautiful skin with NARSkin Gel Luminous Oil-Free Moisturizer, and evened out her complexion with NARS tinted moisturizer. For a healthy summer glow, I highlighted her lids, cheeks, and brow area with MAC Mineralize SkinFinish in Lightscapade and contoured with NARS Laguna matte bronzer. For a multidimensional burgundy lip, I applied NARS Mysterious Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil everywhere on the lips excluding the center and the upper lip vermilion (where the lips meet the surrounding skin). I applied NARS Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, a red-orange color, to the excluded areas and finished with gloss.
For Carolyn Deininger, co-owner of MiCA
Vivian: For a lasting, no frizz, piece-y bob, spray sections with Oribe Soft Lacquer Spray before using a flat iron. DO NOT brush it out—use your fingers to lightly separate from underneath.
Phillip: We created a bronzed smoky eye with NARS And God Created The Woman palette. We used NARS Kalahari (a cool bronze) on lids, then blended a medium-warm taupe (NARS Bellisima) with an eye contour brush above and below the lid. Using a smudging brush, I also used Bellisima to line the bottom lash-line. I added depth and contour to the eye by blending a warm, medium brown (NARS Galapagos) lightly to the crease and smudging it around the lash-line. I finished by lining the waterline and top and bottom lashes with MAC Teddy Eye Kohl, and finished with mascara. For Carolyn’s glossy pink lips, I used NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Mexican Rose.
