Good Luck: Week 16 NFL Picks

44

Last week, I continued to perform about as well as if I were to flip a coin. I went 7-9 and continued to hover around .500 for the year. Somehow, there were eight games last week with a 6.5-point spread, and I picked the favorite in all of them. Of course, I went 4-4 in those games. Three of the nearly-by-a-touchdown favorites—Giants, Texans, and Titans—all lost badly straight up to last-place teams. Houston’s loss to Carolina was especially embarrassing: The Panthers scored a touchdown on a trick play called “the Annexation of Puerto Rico” from the classic 1994 film Little Giants.

Luckily for Bengals fans, the hometown squad was one of the four that covered (barely), pulling out a 20-13 win over lowly St. Louis. It wasn’t a pretty game, but when you’re trying to scrape out the final playoff spot in the AFC, a win is a win, as they say. Bold prediction: The Bengals will have to play better to beat the hot Cardinals this week. More prognostication, complete with me picking all of the 6.5-point favorites, yet again:

Texans (-6.5) over Colts — A win could cost Indy their shot at Andrew Luck. Indy can’t chance it.
Rams (+17.5) over Steelers
Broncos (-2.5) over Bills
Giants (+3.5) over Jets
Jaguars (+7.5) over Titans
Patriots (-8.5) over Dolphins
Browns (+13.5) over Ravens
Chiefs (-2.5) over Raiders
Redskins (-6.5) over Vikings
Panthers (-7.5) over Buccaneers
Chargers (+1.5) over Lions
Eagles (+1.5) over Cowboys
Seahawks (+1.5) over 49ers
Packers (-13.5) over Bears
Saints (-6.5) over Falcons

Bengals (-4.5) over Cardinals — I’ll admit it, this is mostly wishful thinking. I’m not sure at what point this season I started wishing for the Bengals to win. More than anything, I just think it would be fun to see the local squad in the playoffs, even if I mostly don’t care about them. I’ll go with my favorite score to predict: Bengals 24, Cardinals 17.

Record in Week 15: 7-9
Record overall: 104-105-2
Record picking Bengals games against the spread: 8-6
Record picking Bengals games straight up: 8-6
