Ready to pop the question to your special someone but are stumped on what style of ring to pick? Finding the perfect engagement ring can be overwhelming, but there are plenty of options to personalize a ring. From simple designs like a solitaire ring to a classic metal-like yellow gold, here are three ring design trends that are hot this winter. But first, keep these basic tips in mind while shopping for an engagement ring.

Know the basics.
  1. Know the four C’s: cut, color, clarity, and carat
  2. Explore the different styles: solitaire, halo, and vintage
  3. Secretly (or not) snag your partner’s ring size
Keep it simple.

Simple and minimal designs are trending right now, but that doesn’t mean your ring has to be basic. Simple engagement rings allow for more options, like choosing a pave band (a band with a row or two of closely set smaller diamonds) that will make your engagement ring pop. To add dimension to the main ring, pair a couple stackable bands or leave room for future gifts (think birthday or anniversary presents). Other personalized options include adding color or choosing a fun diamond shape, like a heart or pear.

“If you’ve been following the jewelry industry for any period of time, it’s clear that the last few years have been dominated by the less is more approach,” says Clean Origin Marketing Director Brandon Cook. “Uncomplicated elegance is the name of the game; whether it’s subtle twists on iconic designs or stripped back basics, minimalist designs are on-trend.”

Opt for yellow gold.

Yellow gold is back! Not that it was ever really out of style, but white gold has taken the reins for years. Choosing a metal can be difficult, but take note of what kind of jewelry pieces your significant other wears. Do they wear the same metal type or do they mix it up? You can mix-and-match metals for rings, too. A wedding band, for example, is your chance to change up the look. Stacking rings is also a way to diversify the type of metal and personalize the look, whether it be rose gold, white gold, and yellow gold or a combination.

Three stone engagement rings are meaningful.

More isn’t always better, but a trio of diamonds offers more meaning behind the ring. Some consider the three diamonds to stand for friendship, love, and fidelity, or past, present, and future. There’s also the opportunity to choose different cuts and sizes for each diamond, or keep all three the same. Celebs that rock a three-stone engagement ring include Nicole Kidman, Christina Ricci, and—our personal favorite—Meghan Markle, who wears a three-carat, cushion-cut diamond, with two side diamonds that belonged to Harry’s mother, Princess Diana. Talk about sentimental!
