Summer Showers Didn’t Dampen This Couple’s Joy

When rain moved in on Sami and Drew, they made the evening into a personal, intimate celebration of their love.

Sami Stewart’s and Drew Zylka’s couple’s story began one winter evening at Deeper Roots, where Sami was working the closing shift. The two hit it off immediately, Drew kept coming back for lattes, and two years later, the café supplied the coffee when they tied the knot. “I felt like a princess having cappuccinos on demand at my own wedding,” Sami says.

When it came time to choose a venue, the decision was clear. “There’s no venue in the world that would’ve held the same significance and intimacy as [Drew’s] house,” Sami says. The original plan was to have everything outside on June 21, 2021, but when rain started falling, the couple moved the ceremony into the living room. “Everyone jumped in to help,” Sami says. “I’m so grateful for my parents-in-law for letting us turn the place upside down and throw a party in it.”

DIY details, from home-baked desserts to a curated playlist and thrifted linens, made for an unforgettable day, topped off with coffee from the very shop that sparked the couple’s love story. “My coworkers provided such good service, as they always do,” Sami says, “serving drinks in the rain, fielding lots of decaf orders, you name it.” The handmade touches included colorful tissue paper tassels, a playlist Sami created, and dried flowers, which they’d been making for each other since they first began dating.
