Where do you start when styling someone?
First, I meet with them and determine whether we’d even be a good fit for each other. It’s a very personal experience, so I try to determine upfront, “Is this client somebody that I’m going to be able to serve well, and do we have the same objectives?”
Does your personal style influence your consulting work?
I want people to feel unique and feel like they found things that really make them come alive and not just turn them into a clone of me.
Who are some of your style icons?
1990s super models, Elsa Schiaparelli, and Brenda Cooper—she was the costume designer and stylist on the TV show The Nanny. Her take on things, especially because she’s an older woman, and seeing how she doesn’t let age or other people’s opinions sway her—she’s such a badass. I am in my 40s, and one of the things I always try to preach to people [is] not getting caught up on age.
You’ve lived in Asia and Europe and traveled a lot. Where do you take your style inspiration from the most?
I try to glean a little bit of inspiration from everywhere I go, watching how much the environment really influences people’s style—not just the physical environment, but the political and social environment.
What is the most rewarding part of your career as a stylist?
Styling is about dealing with a lot of inner stories that people tell themselves—about their body or their age or about how to dress and what looks good on them. I feel so gratified helping people break out of that and feel confident and feel good.
