How did you get started with Lush Life?
I had a friend mention brokering wines to me and this piqued my interest. However, I also wanted to add the tasting element to it while making wine approachable, accessible, and fun. Lush Life is creating memories and great conversations and experiences over all types of booze.
What’s been the reception for the Black Wine Fest so far?
It’s been insane. What started as a “little” idea to create a more inclusive and cultural wine experience has turned into a top event here in our community and region. Honestly, I still can’t believe it is where it is. The anticipation is amazing and it’s a great feeling knowing that come fall everyone is getting excited and anticipating the event.
What lessons have you learned in the past four years about community while running events?
No matter your background, social status, or race, wine brings people together. My events are like reunions, people connecting over a glass at a table with a winemaker. As I am hosting more wine dinners, tastings, and experiences, I continue to see and meet the community that continues to show up and create these relationships.
Why do you think having an event like yours is important to the community?
It allows people like myself to see individuals who look like us in a space that has historically been dominated by others. Black winemakers make up less than 1 percent of wineries in the United States, which means access, awareness, and representation remain limited. Creating opportunities to introduce consumers to these brands and their stories is incredibly important.
Beyond that, we’re supporting local small businesses, entrepreneurs, and producers by giving them exposure to new audiences and helping them grow their reach within our communities. Most importantly, these events bring together a diverse group of people to connect, celebrate, and create memories while supporting a meaningful cause. In today’s climate, I believe it’s more important than ever to create spaces where everyone feels welcome, valued, and included—where people can gather in community, share experiences, and learn from one another.
