Along the Great Miami Riverway’s 99+ miles of connected communities, you can find experiences for nature lovers, fitness enthusiasts, and families alike. With a ton of free attractions and a host of hidden gems, there’s plenty for you to explore along these six Great Miami Riverway Trails.
Miamisburg Mound

Why it’s special: One of the two largest conical mounds in eastern North America, the Miamisburg Mound is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At 65 feet tall and 800 feet in circumference, the mound is visible from several miles away—it stands atop a 100-foot-high ridge above the Great Miami River. Best for: Families, history buffs, active climbers. Hidden gem: A concrete staircase takes you to the top observation platform to take in the view.
Aviation Cycling Trail
Why it’s special: Explore aviation history along this 20-mile route. There are several highlights worth a stop, including the WACO Air Museum in Troy, the Wright Cycle Company in Dayton, and the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. Best for: Avid cyclists, history buffs. Hidden gem: Fuel up for your return trip with a meal at West Social Tap & Table, located just across the street from the National Historical Park.
Art Trail
Why it’s special: If art is your thing, this curated art-themed trail is worth the ride. Starting at Rentschler Forest MetroPark, take the Great Miami River Recreational Trail just over 5.5 miles to the Fitton Center for Creative Arts. Explore the Center and take a class or just be inspired by those who have already created their masterpieces. If you’re up for continuing your journey, ride through the city and enjoy the multiple murals and sculptures scattered throughout downtown Hamilton. Best for: Art enthusiasts, cyclists. Hidden gem: You’ll wind through Marcum Park, enjoy a splash pad, and end your ride at Municipal Brew Works.
Water Activities Trail

Why it’s special: Ready to experience the Great Miami from the water? The Great Miami River Water Trail offers 60 public access points where you can paddle, fish, surf, or simply watch wildlife. The majority of craft on the river are hand-carried, but there are a few spots with deeper water. Best for: Boaters, fishing excursions Hidden gem: The Great Miami is home to Ohio’s best smallmouth bass fishing, especially between Dayton and Hamilton.
Tawawa Park Trails

Why it’s special: The expansive trail system in Sidney’s premier park offers both paved and natural surface options that wind through a number of diverse habitats. You’ll find beautiful lake views, shady wooded areas, and plenty of playgrounds and picnic areas in these 200 acres. Best for: Families, casual hikers, nature walks, picnics Hidden gem: Big Rock, a large Ice Age boulder that serves as a landmark and a popular spot for photos.
Carillon Historical Park Trails

Why it’s special: This is one of the signature Great Miami Riverway trails. Wind through 65 acres that showcase the region’s history from Dayton’s founding in 1796 through two centuries of expansion, industrialism, and innovation. Best for: History buffs, families, educational walks Hidden gem: In addition to 30 historical buildings and a replica of the Wright Flyer III, the Carillon Park Railroad takes you on a circle tour of the park using a replica of an 1851 locomotive.
