Fifth Third Bank is dedicated to supporting employees and creating space for community and belonging. The bank’s Enterprise Business Resource Groups (EBRGs) are internal employee networks that create a space for employees to develop initiatives that support the workforce and the community. Through these groups, Fifth Third embodies its commitment to inclusion, fostering connection, collaboration, and advocacy and driving positive change. “We believe that inclusion creates the opportunity for all to thrive,” says Nancy Pinckney, Fifth Third’s executive vice president and chief human resources officer. “Creating a culture of belonging and connection where all employees feel cared for and valued is critical to our success and ingrained in our core values.”
Pinckney is the executive advocate of the LGBTQ+ resource group at Fifth Third. Her allyship is personal. In the early ’90s, one of Pinckney’s dearest friends at work went through a painful journey with AIDS. While others, including his family, abandoned him, she was determined to help in any way that she could. “Allen shared his life story with me throughout his final months [and] his story of hiding who he was from his own family is one that I will never forget,” says Pinckney. “He lives on in my heart and soul and fuels my passion to help others.”
With Pinckney’s help, a number of initiatives supporting inclusive practices have come to life. Inclusive benefits, policies, and guidelines that support all employees, including coverage under medical plans for gender reassignment surgery and related services; updated family-related benefits, including increasing benefits for adoption reimbursement, covering infertility treatments and in-vitro fertilization, paid parental bonding leave for all new parents are just a few examples. These efforts have become widely recognized, and in 2024, Fifth Third was awarded the Equality 100 Award as a leader in LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion by the Human Rights Campaign. “We focus intently on helping our employees thrive in a workplace where every voice matters,” Pinckney says, “so that we can continue to make a difference in the lives of our customers, communities and employees.”
