To flip this home, a local husband-and-wife team transformed a kitchen into a master bathroom and restored original maple floors.

Local husband-and-wife duo Adam Shaffer and Erin Miller renovate houses as a side business. (Fans can follow their projects’ progress on Instagram.) In 2017, they flipped a cottage in Silverton, and the following year they redid a Price Hill tudor. The couple’s latest project, this 1929 Deer Park reno, was especially challenging. “The home was previously functioning as a two-family and was in substantial disrepair,” Miller says. “We had a vision for a very functional layout as a single-family.”

Miller and Shaffer brought that vision to life, turning 1,800 square feet of liveable space into a gorgeous three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath Scandinavian farmhouse–style home. And though the home’s exterior appears average, the modern neutral-toned interior is anything but. For starters, it features original maple hardwood flooring throughout (minus the bathrooms, which all have tile floors). “Maple is more durable and less prone to dents than the standard oak,” Miller says. “We were able to refinish the floors and opted for no stain and a natural finish.” The duo also replaced all of the electric and plumbing, installed new heating and cooling systems, and replaced the roof.

On the first floor, the kitchen, dining room, living room, and sitting room-slash-sunroom (which would make sunny at-home office space) are connected by oversized archways that create unity while simultaneously offering a touch more privacy than an open floor plan. Of course, Miller and Shaffer played a role in designing this layout by knocking out part of a wall to create an archway between the foyer and dining room and also widening the opening between the kitchen and family room. “We decided to add an arch to both of these openings, one of our favorite features of the home,” Miller says.

Keeping with the minimalist design, the kitchen features crisp white shaker-style cabinets, a white shiplap accent wall, stainless steel appliances, and a large eat-in island. Upstairs, the spacious master bedroom connects to an en-suite bath, which, believe it or not, previously functioned as a kitchen. Now, it features two separate vanities and a walk-in shower.

Outside, the fenced-in backyard offers plenty of room for entertaining and space for the kiddos and pets to run. The home’s prime location is also worth noting. Situated between hot spots like Madeira and Kenwood, Deer Park is a family-friendly suburb without the price tag. “It feels a bit tucked away,” Miller says, “but is so conveniently located to every amenity you can imagine.” Plus, the home is move-in ready, thanks to Miller and Shaffer’s hard work. We can’t say we’re surprised this gem is already sale pending.
