Erin Barker’s illustrations are just too damn adorable for words. The Lancaster, Ohio native describes her style as “whimsical and organic” and finds inspiration in the work of children’s book authors such as Quentin Blake, John Klassen, and Beatrix Potter. While not opposed to digital artwork, Barker favors handmade illustration that carries the risk—and what she calls “adventure”—of messing up.
In her days as a rising artist, Barker would illustrate her friends’ names and quotes for them, making her first attempt at calligraphy and lettering. Eventually she pursued freelance illustration and design, working for such organizations as Proctor and Gamble and Cold Water Media.
Barker encourages young artists to persist with their work. “Just keep making stuff. Even if you think it’s bad, even if you feel like it’s not worth it. Push yourself to create. You will learn something new from every piece you make, and that will make you a better artist.”
