It wasn’t meant to be a football powerhouse. The Cincinnati Academy of Physical Education—known as CAPE—started as a magnet school in 1977 in response to desegregation efforts in the Cincinnati public school system, focusing its curriculum on health and physical education in hopes of appealing to more white students. Instead, it attracted the area’s best athletes. CAPE followed its first graduating class in 1984 with back-to-back state football championships in ’85 and ’86 and a third in ’92, before closing in 1994.
