This tidy brick home on Mariemont’s west edge is a 1955 ranch-style structure in a neighborhood known mainly for 1920s Tudor Revivals. It was built for a then-rare dual career couple—attorneys I.D. and Sally Weed—and its designer was John A. Burdick, a man who’d later help found one of Cincinnati’s largest architectural firms, GBBN.

Still, those features are not what drew Sean and Renata Moore to the place when they moved here from Nashville in 2009. Sean, a pediatric gastroenterologist, felt an inexplicable connection to Mariemont, learning only later that both it and his hometown of Venice, Florida, were designed by city planner John Nolen. And Renata? “I love that it’s so unassuming from the outside,” says the Brazil native and graphic designer. “Like a little surprise.”

Built into a hillside (as many Queen City Mid-Century Modern structures are), this home seems like a modest split level. But a quick trip down a half-flight of slate-covered stairs leads to a 1,320-square-foot kitchen/great room lined with picture windows overlooking the rear wooded lot.

“We took our time buying pieces that felt right for the house,” says Renata. Their art and decor, which includes everything from Charley Harper prints to cork floors, is period-appropriate and comes from consignment shops, Northside’s Modology, and even online auction website Everything But The House.

Now, as the couple and their three children prepare to leave Cincinnati, they admit feeling ambivalent leaving behind such a special space (on the market for $609,000). Where else will they find original wood casement windows with custom roll screens, a bomb shelter that doubles as a playroom, and boomerang-patterned Formica in the kids’ bath? And don’t forget the matching pink plaid tile floor—Mid-Century Modern at its best.
