There have been great strides in treatments and prevention of HIV, and as Dr. Christian E. Gausvik, a gay physician with The Christ Hospital, explains, PrEP is an option that can work for many people. PrEP, or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a medication used for the prevention of HIV that, when taken daily, reduces the chances of contracting HIV after exposure by about 99%. PrEP is also newly available in an every-other-month injection, which Dr. Gausvik is in the process of offering to patients as well. PrEp comes with minimal side effects and is right for anyone who may be exposed to HIV, Dr. Gausvik says, which may include members of the LGBTQ+ community.
