Getting into your dream school requires more than just good grades, it’s about presenting a well-rounded application. Your résumé, essay, and interview can set you apart. Here’s how to make them stand out.
Create a Strong Résumé
A good mix of academics and extracurricular activities shows that you’re not just focused on studies, but also engaged with your community and passions. Admissions officers want to see a well-rounded and personable applicant, and University of Cincinnati’s Director of Admissions Emilee Suchomski speaks to their standards. “The most important thing we like to see on a résumé is a student’s authentic interests and personality,” she says. “Every student is unique and those unique passions and interests matter to us.” As your first chance to impress, make sure the résumé is neat, well-organized, and free of mistakes.
Make Your Essay Memorable
This is your chance to go beyond test scores and grades and show off your personality and explain your passions, motivations, and goals. Be specific and don’t write a generic essay that could apply to anyone. Share personal stories that show your strengths, challenges, and growth. “It’s easy today to have AI write a résumé, essay, or answer an interview question,” Suchomski says. “There’s nothing wrong with doing this, but make sure to put your own spin on it. Tell us about what matters to you in your writing and why, not what you think we want to hear!”
Ace the Interview
While not all schools require interviews, if yours does, see it as an opportunity to show your enthusiasm. Prepare for common questions, but also be ready for the unexpected. Research the school’s programs and culture so you can explain why you would be a good fit. Confidence paired with sincerity will help you make a lasting impression. As Suchomski advises, “Staying true to yourself in the admissions process is the best all-around advice I can give to any prospective student.”
