When Cock & Bull at Hyde Park Square closed the day after Mother’s Day this year, Peerless Management Group, based in Columbus, was quick to snatch up the real estate, digging in about three weeks later to begin renovations for its forthcoming Mexican restaurant Mesa Loca, set to open later this month.

The concept has been in the works for about two years, says General Manager Kinjal Desai, who was brought on to the project in early spring. A former operating partner of Bauer Farm Kitchen, Desai is no stranger to restaurant openings. He says this one has been different, though. “This is one of the few [restaurants] where people wanted to come in and look around.” In their defense, it is hard to ignore the space.

After eight years of Cock & Bull occupying the corner of Erie Avenue and Edwards Road, the facade has been painted a bright white with coral accents, catching the eye of Hyde Park natives and passersby alike.

Desai hopes for Mesa Loca to be a “community-based restaurant in a community-based location,” but not everything will be traditional. In addition to the expected sangria pitchers and Mexican-sourced beers on tap, there will be smoking and flaming cocktails, and even dishes that come out of the kitchen ablaze. The molcajete, which they call an “elevated fajita platter,” will arrive to the table bubbling with shrimp, chicken, and other assorted bites in a stone pot.

Though this is Peerless’s first foray into Mexican cuisine, Desai says the restaurant group hopes to expand with more Ohio locations in the future. With a hopeful grand opening near the end of November, Mesa Loca aims to bring unique, “crazy” table cuisine to Hyde Park Square.
