How did you get started in the wine industry?
I studied aerospace engineering in college. While in school, I waited tables at Jeff Ruby’s and I was exposed to fine wine. It really blew my hair back. I worked my way up to become the corporate beverage director while getting my sommelier certifications.
What made you take the leap and start Ignition Wines?
I was with Jeff Ruby’s for about 20 years, and it was time for me to do my own thing. That was three years ago. I wanted this company to express who I am and my perception on wine.
So what is your perception on wine?
There’s always something to be explored and something new to find, and that inspired the theme of my business. I like to picture a Venn diagram of outer space and wine, and it’s what falls in the middle.
What does your day to day look like?
Some days are delivery days where I bust out all my deliveries for the week. Other days are sales days where I pop in and catch up with my clients to see what they might need or walk into new businesses to introduce myself.
What do you look for when selecting the wines?
Character and quality are first and foremost. They need to have appeal in the broader market that I serve. At the same time, I also need to ask myself if I’d drink this wine and enjoy it, because I need to believe in the product I’m selling.
What’s your favorite wine?
I’m still looking for it. Wine is and always will be a fascinating subject for me, and I’m always finding something new. That being said, tempranillo is one of my favorite grapes. I love Spanish reds, particularly from Rioja.
What’s unique about Cincinnati’s wine community?
I’ve found it to be very collaborative. It’s very welcoming to people in all different industries. We also have a great selection here. When I talk to people from different cities—even as close as Columbus—they tell me they’re jealous of the wine scene in Cincinnati.
