Summer is right around the corner and now is the time to invest in treatments in products that will get your skin ready for the warmer months ahead. Dermatologist Mona S. Foad, M.D., recommends combining in-office treatments with at-home skincare to look and feel your best.

Diamond Glow Facial

Start simple with a facial that doubles as a skin treatment. The Diamond Glow uses a patented diamond tip to combine microdermabrasion with the infusion of customizable serums to rejuvenate dry winter skin and reveal a youthful glow. “This treatment exfoliates, extracts, and infuses all at the same time,” says Dr. Foad. “It’s a great no-downtime treatment for almost all patients at all ages.”

Laser and Light Treatments

The early spring before you start heading into the sun is a great time to do laser and light treatments to correct discoloration such as redness or brown spots. Dr. Mona’s favorite options include Intense Pulse Light (IPL) or PicoSure.  She recommends a series of 3 IPL treatments to clean up brown spots and redness; or for deeper pigment concerns, texture, and pore size, she suggests a PicoSure Laser treatment.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels deliver excellent results with minimal downtime; however, you must avoid sun exposure for approximately a week after the treatment. That means now is the perfect time to peel away texture, scarring, acne, or aging. Dr. Mona Foad typically recommends a series of three sessions for best results. “Many people are hesitant to try chemical peels until they experience brighter and smoother skin,” Dr. Mona explains. “A few days of dryness and peeling are well worth the results.”

Laser hair removal

Skip daily razor burn by treating key areas with laser hair removal. “Treat yourself to laser hair removal to get yourself bikini and tank top ready,” says Dr. Mona Foad. Popular treatment areas are the armpit and bikini area, giving you smooth, ingrown-free skin before summer is here.

Tone Muscles and Burn Fat

Feel more confident in your summer clothing by shedding unwanted fat and building muscle with a series of EmSculpt Neo treatments. The treatment can reduce fat by 30 percent and increase muscle by 25 percent in nine areas including: abdomen, butt, biceps, triceps, inner and outer thighs, glutes, hamstrings, and calves.

Stock up on sun-protecting skincare products

Sunscreen: It’s a no-brainer that sunscreen is a critical part of your summer routine. Dr. Mona emphasizes the importance of choosing a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Certain brands that include zinc oxide in their formulations create a white cast or film on the skin. For more cosmetically elegant options that still contain a high percentage of Zinc Oxide, Dr. Mona recommends SkinMedica, Colorescience, and EltaMD.

Antioxidants: As you begin spending more time outdoors, another key product to keep in your routine are antioxidants that help to prevent free radical damage from sun exposure. “SkinMedica’s Lumivive System is the latest in antioxidant technology and protects your skin from the environmental damage of the sun, pollution, infrared, and blue light,” says Dr. Mona. This two-step system has both a morning and night serum that gives your skin protection during the day and repairs damage overnight. Another option is to use a topical vitamin C that neutralizes free radicals and helps with aging. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Serum is also a customer favorite. It brightens skin and is clinically proven to reduce oxidative damage by up to 41 percent.

Skin Brighteners: If you are prone to developing brown spots, Dr. Mona also suggests adding a skin brightener such as SkinMedica’s Lytera 2.0. “I love preventing aging, sun damage, and brown spots from forming,” says Dr. Mona Foad. “Lytera is a must-have in my morning routine.”

Schedule a consultation

If you’re unsure what treatment to choose or products to buy, schedule a consultation with one of Mona Dermatology’s experts. The team will evaluate your goals and recommend the best treatment options to help you get ready for summer.
