Visiting the ice rink on Fountain Square is a quintessential part of celebrating the holiday season in Cincinnati. This year, UC Health’s outdoor ice arena puts a socially-distanced spin on the tradition of ice skating with new on-ice bumper cars.
The brightly-colored bumper cars debuted on November 7, and they will be available for use until the rink closes for the season on February 15. For the first few weeks after opening, the rink will operate on a “split-ice” system Sundays through Thursdays, with half of the space dedicated to bumper cars and the other half reserved for skaters. Fridays and Saturdays will feature both “split-ice” sessions and skating-only sessions. This schedule is subject to change in mid-December, however, as the busier holiday season approaches.
As of now, the ice rink is by reservation only. Whether patrons are interested in carnival-style fun with the bumper cars or a classic ice skating session, they must book their visit online through Fountain Square’s website. Prospective visitors should be reminded that reservations are non-refundable and can be made as early as two weeks in advance. Tickets purchased for “split-ice” sessions include both skate rentals and unlimited bumper car rides for 60 minutes.
To ensure the health and safety of all skaters, face masks are required for entry and must be worn at all times. In addition, guests are asked to be patient with staff members as they will be sanitizing and resetting the rink between reservation groups.
The Fountain Square ice rink will continue to provide the same amenities featured in previous years. These include everything from rental skates to lockers for securing visitors’ belongings while they’re having fun on the ice. A full-service concessions tent will carry soda, hot and cold snacks, and alcoholic beverages for skaters to enjoy. Plus, the much-loved WGU Warming Tent will be back this winter for those who want to cozy up and recharge after a skate session.
