2. Music for Change: Hymns, Blues, and Rock
Fresh out of World Choir Games fever, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center offers a series of events that highlights the universal awesomeness of music. This week’s musts include a poetry slam on Thursday night and an “Open Sunday” event, where audiences will be treated to entertainment from a diverse set of musicians hoping to send family-friendly, positive messages. 3. Hugh Laurie at Miami Middletown
Hugh Laurie, of House fame, moonlights as the front man for his New Orleans–style-blues Copper Bottom Band, now touring their latest album, Let Them Talk. 4. Francis Upritchard at the CAC
New Zealand–born artist Francis Upritchard is known for mixed media installations that combine kitschy found objects with imagery that is both cheeky and unsettling. The Contemporary Arts Center’s Francis Upritchard: A Long Wait features the artist’s figurative clay sculptures layered with psychedelic colors—pieces that feel both ancient and futuristic. 5. Soul of the City
The 5300 Group, a circle of seven local artists whose specialties range from photography to sculpture, showcases artwork that reflects and explores urban life. Soul of the City is the second installment in The Betts House’s exhibit “The Art of the Built Environment” and features paintings, sculptures, mobiles, and other pieces that represents the artists’ personal interpretations and observations of our fab city.
