Sometimes man’s best friend could stand to do less shedding all over the couch and more fitting in with your modern decor. At about 13 inches tall, this little geometric guy (made of handcrafted porcelain) will do the job, no walks required. IMAX Winslow Porcelain Dog, $55, Elm & Iron, elmandiron.com

Betta fish, native to Southeast Asia, are vibrantly colored beauties with long, flowing fins that can live several years. The males are also massively territorial. So keep them solo, or you may have a fish fight on your hands. And be sure to treat/dechlorinate tap water, or you risk your new pal going belly-up. Betta fish, $4.49; bowl, $4.79; net, $1.79; water conditioner, $2.29; Monfort Aquarium & Pet Shop, monfortaquarium.com
