Roger Staubach’s Hail Mary

Amid the Super Bowl wins and Hall-of-Fame accolades, it’s easy to forget that the catalyst for legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach’s career occurred in a Purcell High School uniform. In his first varsity start as quarterback for Purcell in 1959, Staubach threw a Hail Mary touchdown pass in the final minute to beat Dayton Chaminade by a final score of 28–20. Staubach went on to win a Heisman trophy at the U.S. Naval Academy and two Super Bowls for the Cowboys, but it was the 1959 heave that had him telling The Cincinnati Enquirer years later, “That win over Chaminade changed my life.”
