On February 4, 2015 Chuck Reed was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. His doctors gave him only six weeks to six months to live. After receiving such shocking and devastating news, Chuck and his wife Melissa found the strength and desire to play a performance with their band “DV8” that same week. After seeing the performance, longtime friend Kevin Canafax phoned Melissa to see what he could do to join the fight. His words of encouragement “Be Strong, One Song, Play On” inspired the creation of the annual Play On concert event.
The first Play On concert event was held by Chuck, Melissa and loyal friends and family within three months of diagnosis. The May 8, 2015 benefit drew more than 800 attendees and raised $20,000 for pancreatic cancer awareness and research.
The third annual Play On concert is scheduled for Friday, September 22. The Reeds have something to celebrate. Chuck’s surgery earlier this year was successful, and he continues his fight for a full recovery. Chuck’s love for community, family, friends, and music propelled him to fight hard and survive what many are not able to. Chuck will now get to witness the legacy that he originally only hoped to leave.
The Play On concert benefits GIVEHOPE, an entirely volunteer-run organization that supports southwest Ohio cancer patients and their families, as well as local cancer researchers at the University of Cincinnati.
Melissa Reed says they are “blessed to work with the team at the Sharonville Convention Center.” The Sharonville Convention Center is honored to host the third annual Play On concert and to play a small part in this inspirational event.
