We didn’t get to enjoy a winter wonderland this holiday season. But as far as lovely landscapes are concerned, you can walk straight into the woods at the Cincinnati Art Museum—that is, if you hurry. While the Van Gogh exhibit is the No. 1 reason to make a trip to the Eden Park institution this week, we’ve got a couple more. Here’s what—and why—to explore.
1. Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth
We all know Starry Night, but there’s far more to van Gogh and his love of the natural world. Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth, an exhibition centered on Vincent van Gogh’s Undergrowth with Two Figures, part of the museum’s permanent collection, ends on January 8. Showing only at the Cincinnati Art Museum, the exhibition focuses on the Post-Impressionist painter’s poetic depictions of the forest floor, or sous-bois (which means “undergrowth”).
“Undergrowth with Two Figures is widely recognized as one of the great masterpieces of van Gogh’s late career,” says Julie Aronson, Curator of American Painting and Sculpture. “It is also a visitor favorite—often the favorite—among the many extraordinary works in our galleries.”
2. Employed: A Staff Art Exhibition
For those who love supporting local artists—and who love all forms of media—Employed: A Staff Art Exhibition offers an engaging look at both. An independent juror selected 70 artworks, including fashion, sculpture, painting, photography, and digital art, created by 37 artists from the region who work as both artists and museum professionals.
Says Josh Rectenwald, museum preparator: “Some of the art revealed artistic style and subject matter miles away from what I would’ve imagined.” Clearly works by some creative and passionate people that are worth seeing.
3. The Museum Experience Just Got Even Better
The Art Museum is now open on Thursday evenings from 5–8 p.m. Also, general parking is FREE. That means even more art enthusiasts can experience the renowned collection of 67,000 works spanning 6,000 years. During your visit, have a bite at the bright and airy Terrace Café, which serves soups, salads, and sandwiches. Refuel with the Roasted Butternut Squash Salad or the Fig & Brie Grilled Cheese and set off on another round of artistic exploration.
