The first time you gaze into the face of your precious newborn, that mother-bear instinct automatically kicks in and you know you’ll do anything to keep her safe. Why not start with a free safety check to ensure your car seat is installed properly?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has determined that the majority of car seats are installed incorrectly, putting a child at risk of serious injury—even death—during a collision. Visit cincinnatichildrens.org/health/c/car-seat-fitting for a comprehensive list of fitting stations in the Cincinnati region. Dayton Children’s Hospital also offers monthly car-seat checks.
When you purchase your seat, it’s best to choose one that fits your car. The website safercar.gov/parents/CarSeats.htm provides tips for choosing and installing a seat, as well as a signup for recall notification.
To reduce the risk of serious injury, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends your child face the rear of the car as long as possible, up to age 2. Never place a child under 12 in the front seat, as air-bag deployment can be deadly.
