Shop Talk: Details in Newtown

Details owner Barb Greve got her start buying antiques and refurbishing them for resale. Her work was so popular that she began hosting shows out of her own house, Tupperware party-style. “I would clear the whole first floor,” Greve says. “The event lasted two days, and that is how I established my clientele.” With a customer base on deck, Greve bought a little house in Newtown, gutted it, and opened Details in 2005.

The cozy one-room shop is packed with unique picture frames, funky mirrors, benches, and dressers, and an assortment of accessories and other home decorations. “I buy things that I like, not things that I think people will want,” she says.

Greve recently purchased the space next door and will open a show room, which will double as a place to hold DIY and charity events. “My favorite thing about the store is the customer,” Greve says. “I think a lot of places are missing that today—the personal aspect. I talk and get to know all of my customers.”
