On The Market: An Array of Strauss Houses

3357
Architects Carl Strauss and Ray Roush were among Cincinnati’s most prolific modernists, designing more than one hundred structures citywide and mentoring young architects like Michael Graves, who went on to alter the face of architecture worldwide. As luck would have it, three of Strauss and Roush’s Hyde Park homes are currently for sale. Good luck choosing just one…
2587 Grandin Road, Hyde Park, $679,000
Set on 1.56 acres with a fully stocked fishing pond, this 1979 “country home in the city,” says listing agent Beth Silber, is just a mile from Hyde Park Square. It features all the same lines and angles Strauss & Roush fans expect; but it’s also been well-maintained and updated over the years, including the addition of a few sizable windows out front. Our favorite spot bar none is the deck out back overlooking the pond, which also has a dock and fountain. Considering the prices of surrounding real estate, this architectural gem is a bargain.

3 Grandin Place, Hyde Park, $750,000
This 1959 home, custom designed for its only owners to date, needs some love but 100% exemplifies Strauss and Roush’s style. Bright, open, and built directly into a Cincinnati hillside (as was the architects’ custom), the home is filled with design details best appreciated in person: angled ceilings and walls, original brick and hardwood floors, access to outdoor space from nearly every room in the house and a symmetry with its wooded site that few architects today are capable of creating. “I’ve seen a lot of Carl’s houses,” says listing agent Gerri Strauss. “In this one, I feel totally serene. Paint it, make a few minor changes and it would be absolutely stunning.”

3 Melville Lane, Hyde Park, $2,550,000
We’ve always loved this one because its front walkway is a bridge; now, after extensive renovations, it shines. Any purist will tell you that the real star of a Strauss / Roush home is the land and space around it; the structure’s job is to be as unobtrusive as possible. That’s still very much the case here, where stunning river views can be found in the great room, multiple bedrooms and even from the in-ground pool. “The owner wanted to modernize without taking away from the Strauss design,” says listing agent Perrin March. We say: mission accomplished.
