If you’ve ever driven down Cleves Warsaw Pike, it’s hard not to notice the house with the bright blue cedar-shake roof. Sited on a rolling two-and-a-half-acre lot across from the Western Hills Country Club, the appropriately named Blue Gables “always looked like something out of a fairy tale to me,” says owner Jayne Patton.
Thanks to the efforts of both its current and original owners, this French cottage-style home is as quaint inside as it is out. Blue Gables was built by Alice and Charles Terry in the early 1900s in the style of seaside cottages in Brittany, France; by the time Jayne and Andy Patton bought the home in 1983, it was badly in need of restoration.
Over the past 28 years, the Pattons have refinished the kitchen’s random-width pegged wood floors, restored the living room’s beamed ceiling, and refurbished the dining room’s intricate iron-work gates. They also restored—and enlarged—the property’s two-bedroom carriage house. (And it can all be yours, for $580,000.)
More captivating than the home’s visual charm, though, are its stories. Jayne Patton confirms that there was once a fire pole from the attic down to the second floor, and that she personally has seen photos of a horse standing in the middle of the kitchen (prior to the Pattons’ ownership, of course).
At one time the house even had its own china and glassware patterns, as well as its own stationery (the Pattons have the original engraving plates). The china has all been lost, but one piece of the glassware remains—a tangible reminder of Blue Gables’s “fairy tale” pedigree.
