United States of Bellbottoms

133

Fountain Square in 1973 was a gorgeous crush of cultural archetypes: flower children, funktastic soul brothers, bouffanted housewives, scrappy school kids, scruffy hippies, and many, many women not wearing bras. Some were protesting, some were interpretive dancing, some were just rocking their bellbottoms. We can see them all together in living color thanks to photographer Tom Hubbard, who for six years in the 1970s made a photographic record of American life for his DOCUMERICA Project 1971–1977.
