The holidays are just around the corner, and one of the easiest and most impactful ways to refresh a room is by adding an area rug. At Best Furniture Gallery in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, you’ll find a full selection of area rugs to meet any need. Owner Carolynn Reis shares her many years of experience to help you select the perfect rug for your living spaces.
Getting the right rug starts with asking the right questions. Reis suggests customers begin with the dimensions of the room, as well as the existing furniture and its positioning. “We invite our customers to bring in photos of the room so we can recommend a rug that fits the space, compliments the decor, and meets the customers’ expectation as far as how the rug will perform,” Reis says.
An important note to keep in mind about size is that all area rugs are sold as cut sizes. That means what the tag describes as an 8-by-10-foot rug might actually be 7 feet and 6 inches by 9 feet and 6 inches. “You should always take the actual size of your rug into account, especially in dining settings. Those extra few inches can make a big difference,” Reis says.
Additionally, Reis recommends considering the feel of your home. The purpose of decorating is to give each room in your house its own unique mood, and that can translate to different sizes or types of rugs in sleeping areas verses living spaces. Here are some tips to keep in mind when selecting area rugs for specific rooms and spaces:
In bedrooms, area rugs should be large enough for you to take a step or two away from the bed and still be on the rug. In rooms with two beds, such as a children’s room, a rug looks perfect centered between the two beds. Suggested rug sizes for bedrooms include 6 by 9, 9 by 12, 8 by 11, 10 by 14, or 9 by 12.
Living spaces, on the other hand, are more versatile when it comes to selecting the perfect rug, as they are generally the largest and most open spaces in the home. “Consider thinking outside the box when it comes to living rooms,” Reis says. “Your options are almost unlimited, and most any shape can add interest and be effective in a living space.” Suggested rug sizes for living spaces include 6 by 9 for smaller rooms and 12 by 15 or larger for bigger rooms.
Dining Rooms or Kitchens
In both dining rooms and kitchens, the size of your table typically determines the size of the rug. Reis says there should be 18 to 24 inches of rug beyond the table on all sides so that chairs remain on the rug as people push back from the table. “If you frequently entertain, make sure to get a rug large enough to accommodate extra leaves for the table when you expand it, and don’t forget to take into account the other furniture in the room, such as buffets or cabinets. Having a rug that’s too small is one of the most common mistakes we see in dining areas,” she adds. Suggested rug sizes for dining and kitchen spaces include 12 by 15, 8 by 10 ovals, or for the kitchen, an 8-foot runner paired with a 4 by 6 or a 10 by 14.
Halls and Entry Ways
One of the best ways to tie your home together is by choosing a hall or entry rug that coordinates with the rest of the space. Foyer rugs and step runners can create a dramatic welcome for arriving guests and can add a polished look to the space, especially when coordinated with the feel and style of the space.
Don’t forget the outdoors!
As outdoor area rugs have become common place, the styles and designs have improved tremendously. An outdoor area rug can help to soften and define an otherwise cold and rambling space. Carolynn enjoys using color and shape to ground the “room” and express the client’s sense of style and whimsy. This is a space where you can use your imagination and have some fun.
