In today’s competitive hiring landscape, finding qualified candidates is only half the battle. Employers across the region report that technical skills alone aren’t enough. Businesses need employees who can think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate across teams, and adapt to evolving workplace demands.

Miami University Regionals new polytechnic educational model offers employers the answer to this challenging situation with a variety of partnership opportunities. Samy Broyles, director of workforce, partnerships, and community engagement at Miami University Regionals, is leading the way in matching qualified talent with industry. “We listen first to employers and the community, then collectively design programs, credentials, and spaces that meet people where they are and help them move forward faster,” says Broyles. “At the end of the day, it’s about aligning education with opportunity so students, employers, and our region all thrive together.”

Broyles is uniquely suited to this role. During his undergraduate years at Miami University, he was engaged in service learning at the Booker T. Washington Community Center (BTWCC), operated by the Great Miami Valley YMCA. Following his graduation in 2015, Broyles joined the frontline staff at BTWCC and eventually rose to executive director of that location as well as the Hamilton Central YMCA branch. He joined Miami University Regionals in 2022 as Regional Director for Community and Alumni Engagement, and last year took on his new position.

Throughout his career, Broyles has served more than 15 organizations as a board member, trustee, or committee participant. He also earned a spot on the Cincinnati Business Courier’s 2025 40 Under 40 list, with one nominating letter calling him a “dynamic leader” for the community, praising his ability to bring people together and rally them around a shared vision.

Today, Broyles is using his skills to connect local businesses to the talent pool available at Miami University Regionals. “Together, we are creating faster and more accessible pathways into the workforce,” Broyles says. Partnerships between Miami and businesses can include hiring students through internships, co-ops, and applied learning; opportunities to shape curriculum to ensure graduates are trained and ready to work in the industry; and research collaboration to support business needs. As the only polytechnic institution in the state of Ohio, Miami University Regionals polytechnic educational model is uniquely positioned to be a preferred workforce partner for employers because of its industry-led advisory committees and a strong, connected talent pipeline. And Broyles is here to help. “The goal is to make engagement with Miami simple, strategic, and impactful,” he says.

A partnership success story

In an industry facing significant nursing shortages, Kettering Health Hamilton saw a strong return on investment by building a reliable, prepared talent pipeline. Kettering Health Hamilton partnered with Miami University Regionals Work+ program to create positions for students in the nursing program. Work+ is a program where employers partner with Miami to pay the tuition of students earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree while working part-time at their business and taking classes in their major of choice. This partnership provides early, paid, hands-on experience for nursing students. As a result, 12 students from last year’s graduating class accepted roles with Kettering Health Hamilton after graduation.
