Pioneers made their way into the Montgomery, Ohio, area en masse starting in 1795. History buffs will recognize the date as marking the Treaty of Greeneville, which opened up much of the Great Lakes region to unchecked expansion by European settlers. And indeed just eight years later, this two-story brick farmhouse was constructed on the narrow village turnpike that is now Montgomery Road.

The City of Montgomery calls it the Grover-Kjellenberg House. Originally owned by Adam Grover, who gave property at Montgomery and Deerfield roads for Hopewell Cemetery and the Presbyterian church, it was later the home of local historian Marion Kjellenberg, owner and publisher of the Sycamore Messenger newspaper.

The three-bedroom home stands today on a larger-than-average 2.6 acres, smack in the middle of a bustling corridor that includes churches, parks, shops, and the sprawling Bethesda North Hospital campus. And though everything around it is different, the house’s curb appeal is largely unchanged from those early years.

Twentieth-century additions include an eat-in kitchen, a first-floor laundry room, and a large primary suite upstairs. Huge mature trees line the long driveway that snakes around behind the house to the garage, where a second floor has a flexible workshop or office space. A darling side porch extends the outdoor living space and features filigree brackets.

A home of this vintage has lived many lives (some say it was a stop on the Underground Railroad), but in this case, a single family oversaw its conservation for the last 40 years. They maintained original built-in cabinetry, staircases, brick walls, and fireplaces that all feel unmistakably Colonial in style. This consistency and devotion to detail make for an ideal historic home, one that feels exceptional and liveable.
