Located in one of Over-the-Rhine’s many historic buildings, Lane & Kate’s sun-filled storefront is a haven of pre-wedding serenity, its display cases dressed with dried flowers, and stocked with slim, dainty jewels. Lane & Kate specializes in “barely there beauties,” as they put it, that hone in on the intimacy of jewelry—particularly engagement rings.

The store is the brainchild of Rachel Lane Pfeiffer, who first found her footing in the world of jewelry while managing a boutique (which she juggled with an English major) in her hometown of Oxford. With the help of her sister, Jessica Kate, Pfeiffer launched her OTR store, where she could fully devote a space to her passion for intricate pieces.

“By keeping the designs delicate and feminine, we can reach more audiences, and then we grow with them,” says Ellana Hagedorn, the boutique’s current owner and designer. “We meet them as they shop our small fashion jewelry, and then they grow with us into their fine jewelry.”

The store offers readily available rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, many of which are crafted by women artists whose lines are mindful of ethics and sustainability. When it comes to customizing wedding jewelry with Lane & Kate’s “diamond babes,” the consultation process is especially personal.

“These are purchases that represent—as cheesy as it sounds—a love between you and your future partner,” Hagedorn says. “So you want to feel good about where you’re buying the ring and know that you’re supported.”
