You don’t have to venture too deep into Imago’s 37-acre East Price Hill nature preserve to find yourself in a peaceful oasis. The labyrinth, a circular winding path used for walking meditation, is situated between the education building and the Found Home Trail. The path was installed in 2013 by a team of volunteers and founding Imago members who wanted to provide more spiritual experiences for visitors.
“That team had been leading different rituals and celebrations on the natural calendar like the solstice and equinoxes, and they had been looking to do an intentional walking type of meditation,” says Imago Executive Director Chris Clement. There is no wrong way to use the path made from woodchips, grass, and wintercreeper, but Clement has some suggestions. “As you go inward, you can focus on your steps and on your breath, and some people like focusing on the sounds of nature and what they see around them. The main thing is that you’re being present as you’re walking it.”
