36th Annual Black Family Reunion
Head to Sawyer Point for four days of Black pride and celebration. This year’s Black Family Reunion will feature speakers like award-wining journalist Roland Martin, City Manager Cheryl Long, and WLWT Anchor Courtis Fuller, as well as musical performances from Doug E. Fresh, Vashawn Mitchell, Ricky Dillard, and the Leo High School Boy’s Choir. Other activities include a job fair, children’s carnival, choir competition, Black history tour of the city, and more. The whole family is invited to Long Branch Farm and Trails to learn everything there is to know about bats. You and your kids will get to look at a bat up close and see how they nocturnally navigate the world. After the talk, you’ll do some other bat-related activities before heading out on the trail. The night will finish up with a hike where your guide will use high-tech equipment to listen to and look for bats. Admission is $10 for Cincinnati Nature Center members and $16 for non-members. Frightful Fridays: I Know What You Did Last Summer
Brad Hargis of the Old Man Brad horror podcast is hosting a late-night screening of the 1997 teen slasher sensation, I Know What You Did Last Summer. Every month Hargis programs a horror favorite for his Frightful Fridays series at the Esquire. You’ll wrap up your summer with the warm-weather classic featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Anne Heche. Tickets are $10.25. It’s just like your favorite elementary school bookfair but with alcohol! Roebling Books will be bringing 90-120 different titles of all different genres to the patio of Wooden Cask Brewing Company to rekindle the love of reading in adults. All the other fun stuff you remember buying from the bookfair will be for sale too— puzzles, stickers, bags, and more. Gaden Samdrupling Monastery Open House and Taste of Tibet
The Buddhist Monastery in Groesbeck is opening its doors and inviting the public in on Saturday. From 3-6 p.m. you’ll be able to see the monastery’s one-of-a-kind collection of traditional Tibetan art and Buddha statues and even take guided tours of the facility with no reservation required. RSVPs will be required for the 6 p.m. Taste of Tibet dinner. The meal will be buffet style, serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian Tibetan favorites like momos, alu khatsa, and tea prepared by the monks. Donations of $15 are suggested for the dinner. First Annual Norwood Comedy Festival
More than 25 local and regional comedians are coming together for the first ever Norwood Comedy Festival. The free event with four different showcases will be the biggest one-day comedy festival in the Cincinnati region. In addition to six hours of live stand-up comedy, there will be food trucks, a beer garden hosted by Northwood Cider Company and MPH Brewing, and over 30 craft vendors. Attention all Gunpla enthusiasts— Bandai Hobby is bringing its national Gundam mobile tour to Cincinnati. For two days, you’ll get to shop for exclusive items, playtest video games, see a life size Gundam statue, take part in a VR experience, participate in free workshops, and more. The Doobie Brothers: Summer 2024
Listen to the Music at Riverbend. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, The Doobie Brothers, are coming to town to play their hits like “Black Water,” “What a Fool Believes,” “Long Train Runnin’,” and more. Special guest Steve Winwood, best known for “Higher Love,” will be opening for the band. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and it’s recommended you check Riverbend’s website for bag policies. Summermusik: Bach Meets Bollywood
Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra’s Summermusik Festival (which happens to be celebrating its 50th season) will present an afternoon performance connecting and celebrating western classical and Indian raga music. Popular Bollywood tunes will be played alongside Bach, Beethoven, and traditional ragas written by local composer Kanniks Kannikeswaran and arranged by Vidita Kanniks. Additionally, there will be henna artists in the lobby. Tickets are $40 for adults, $10 for students, and free for kids under 13.
