One batch of brownies was all it took to change Tom Kahan and Miriam Spitz’s career trajectories. The couple had been grinding away in corporate America but was in the mood to try something different.
“One night, we brought fudgy chocolate brownies—the ones I used to make with my mom—to a party,” Spitz says. “[They] were a huge hit, and our lives were changed! We wanted to start our own business and finally realized that brownies were the perfect idea.”
This week, Buckabee Brownies, the company that grew out of that fateful night, celebrates its fifth anniversary. Kahan and Spitz are hosting a customer appreciation day today, February 7, with a special discount, five brownies for $5 (while supplies last, limit one per household).
“The fact that we are here, a local mom and pop, with just the two of us doing everything ourselves, celebrating five years,” Spitz says. “That is an achievement in itself.”
Shipping nationwide, the Blue Ash-based brownie shop now offers more than 50 flavors, including gluten- and vegan options. The couple’s future goals include filling more large corporate orders (“It broke our heart to turn down an order for 24,000 brownies this past holiday season, but we have our eyes set on accomplishing this and more,” Spitz explains) and continuing to donate to local schools and organizations.
Spitz says her and her husband working together as a team and taking chances have been the biggest contributors to their success. “We are also very fortunate to have the support of our amazing and loyal community and customers,” she adds.
