With my youngest almost 8 and my oldest 14, I feel like Tony McCosham and I have finally entered the parenthood era wherein we can leave the kids for a few hours and go on dates. It only took 14 years to get here!

So we’ve been taking advantage of the built-in babysitting and going out regularly, which has been such a boon for our relationship and also for ourselves as individuals.

It’s helpful living just 20 minutes from the city center and having some super swanky date night options nearby. Enter: The Rambler, a new addition to Montgomery Quarter with a swanky hotel bar and restaurant—Sidecar—open to non-guests.

Now, I am all about a vibe and Tony McCosham knows this. I love all things Mid-Century Modern and Mad Men, and I had a good feeling about Sidecar as a vibey, date-night destination. It didn’t disappoint.

We parked in the onsite garage (free!) and took the elevator up to the bar. The elevator set the scene perfectly and after exiting, we were both captivated by the wall art en route to Sidecar. We entered the restaurant and I felt like we were on the set of Mad Men, actually; it felt like the kind of place Don Draper and Roger Sterling would go to meet a client. Low lighting, a crackling fireplace, and elevated design all made for a really cozy, romantic date night destination.

We sat at the bar and I ordered a New Riff, neat, while Tony McCosham went for a Coke spiked with cherry juice (no grenadine here!). We sat and talked and flirted and it was a really lovely way to spend a couple hours on a Saturday evening before the dinner rush. The bartender was lovely and didn’t interrupt us, which I appreciated as TM and I get interrupted plenty at home.

Afterwards we wandered a bit in Downtown Montgomery and took in the holiday lights. It was a perfect evening and I hope to replicate it again very soon, as our hometown is an especially charming vibe during the holiday season.
