Officially, Jake and Maria met during freshman move-in day in 2014, courtesy of Maria’s mother. But their friendship blossomed—both ran on the university’s cross country and track teams, and lived in the same dorms freshman and sophomore year. Jake asked Maria to be his date to his sister’s wedding in Florida, and it was on that trip that friendship turned to romance.

In December of 2019, five years after that fateful dorm meeting, Maria, now a registered dietitian at Dayton’s Children’s Hospital graduated with her master’s degree from Miami. The next day, “Jake and I got engaged on the track where we both have some of our fondest memories,” Maria says. It only made sense to hold their ceremony on campus, so on May 29, 2021, that’s what they did.

“Our rehearsal dinner was at Patterson’s,” says Maria, adding that the popular breakfast spot allowed them to bring in food from Paesano’s Pasta House for the occasion. “It was so much to have one of our favorite date night places and breakfast place merge together for our rehearsal dinner,” she says. But the treats didn’t stop there: Bagel and Deli catered the late-night snack at the reception.

Maria says, “It was such a special day in our favorite place with our favorite people.”
