Nestled in the southwest tip of Kentucky, the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy as the nation’s only land reserve dedicated to recreational activities. With horseback riding, water skiing, boating, hiking, swimming, fishing, and thousands of acres to explore, the park more than meets its mission. If camping cramps your style, check into one of the many cabins and lodges that surround the park, such as Lake Barkley Lodge or Lakeview Cottages and Marina, located on the banks of Lake Kentucky. You’ll need your rest to make a dent in the 200 miles of trails that weave throughout the park. Land Between the Lakes, 100 Van Morgan Dr., Golden Pond, Kentucky, (270) 924-2000, lbl.org
