Looking for a weekend vaycay? Think small. Whether you like the city life or are more of a country mouse, here are five cozy bed and breakfasts handy to Cincinnati.

1. White Stone Inn (Knoxville, Tennessee)

This cozy village property sits on 360 rolling acres, and includes cottages, a farmhouse, school-house, chapel, and barn. Guests can choose from 22 homey rooms, each with a personal fireplace, whirlpool, and stunning view of the countryside. Butter some hot biscuits for breakfast, and you’ll be ready to fish on the lake, hike the eight miles of walking trails, or get a facial at the Day Spa.

2. The Inn at Irwin Gardens (Columbus, IN)

Not your typical B&B, this 13,000 square-foot Victorian mansion, built in 1864, boasts ornate woodwork and 19th-century architecture. Stay in one of five antique-furnished rooms (the bathrooms still have the original early-1900s fixtures), visit the gardens, then relax with a massage at the spa. After breakfast in the swanky formal dining room, explore Columbus, Indiana, where you can find modern architectural marvels right alongside charming Victorian buildings. Start with the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, designed by I. M. Pei (of the Louvre Pyramid fame). And don’t miss a tour of the Miller House, a sprawling modern art dream of a home by Eero Saarinen, who designed St. Louis’s Gateway Arch.

3. Glenn House Inn (Yellow Springs, OH)

A mile outside Yellow Springs lies a secret haven of art and luxury. The entire stately Italianate villa also doubles as an art gallery (the main hall features rotating pieces by local artists), and the inn is decorated in a modern style. Stay in one of the four luxe rooms (personal fireplaces and balconies, no less), take a dip in the pool, then enjoy the breakfast made with fresh, locally grown ingredients (there are even some vegan options).

4. Hawthorne Park Bed and Breakfast (Columbus, OH)

It’s not your home, but it sure does feel like it. Three miles from downtown Columbus, the shingled 1900s-era house is bursting with historic charm and coziness. The front porch, parlors, and four comfortably modern bedrooms are perfect places to relax. Ask for a free YMCA pass on your stay (it’s just down the street)—you’ll need it to burn off the freshly baked brownies. Enjoy a home cooked breakfast before heading out to explore Columbus’s German Village, North Market, and Museum of Art.

5. A Storybook Inn (Versailles, KY)

Southern 1830’s mansion. Horse capital of the world. Need more incentive? Stay in one of the four classic movie-themed suites (fancy a night in Casablanca?) or, if you’re looking for privacy, the new guesthouse. Explore the renovated home or take a tour of the extensive grounds that feature an ancient stone pond, original carriage house, and tree-lined walkways. Eat your amaretto French toast in the glass Conservatory, but go ahead and sip your freshly ground coffee on the screened in porch overlooking the garden.
