Top 5 Ways To Get A Little Pumpkin Into Your Life
Fall’s favorite globular gourd has so much potential (Pies! Jack O’Lanterns! Pumpkin spice everything!), and we know it can be overwhelming. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to compile a list of prolific pumpkin possibilities.
1. Chuck A Pumpkin
Put those old Jack O’Lanterns to good use as ammo for a giant trebuchet (a catapult harking from the medieval era) at the 7th annual Pumpkin Chuck at Stanbery Park. Locals Scott Kelley and Mark Lorenz bring out the big guns—the two largest trebuchets in the tri-state, that is—every fall to fling pumpkins into oblivion and raise money for Stanbery Park’s upkeep. In addition to the trebuchet-ing, the Chuck includes live music, food, and children’s crafts and animal exhibits. Nov. 2, noon-5 p.m. Stanbery Park, 2221 Oxford Ave, Mt. Washington (513) 352-4080.
2. Drink A Pumpkin
Down your pumpkin by the pint at one of Cincinnati’s local breweries: Madtree Brewing Company’s PumpCan and Rivertown Brewing Company’s Pumpkin Ale range in pumpkin-ness from mild-mannered to sweet as pie. Keep an eye out for Rock Bottom Brewery’s Monster Mash Pumpkin Ale, too, which will debut the last week of October. Madtree Brewing Company 5164 Kennedy Ave., Kennedy Heights, (513) 836-8733. Rivertown Brewing Company, 607 Shepherd Dr., Lockland, (513) 827-9280. Rock Bottom Brewery, 10 Fountain Square, downtown (513) 621-1588.
3. Bake A Pumpkin
Most people would agree that just about anything is better in cookie form, and that definitely includes pumpkin. Find these tasty treats made by Happy Chicks Bakery at Park + Vine or order them from the Happy Chicks website. Bonus: these cookies are dairy-free, for any vegans out there. www.happychicksbakery.com
4. See A Giant Pumpkin
Pumpkins that weigh almost as much as a Smart Car? Giant pumpkin sculpting? Pumpkin pie eating contests? The Circleville Pumpkin Show has all of this and more for those who don’t mess around when it comes to pumpkin. Oct. 16-19, 159 E. Franklin St., Circleville, www.pumpkinshow.com
5. Honorable Mention: Eat Pumpkin Spice M&Ms
So, okay, it’s not real pumpkin. But if anything can somehow combine chocolate and pumpkin—into teeny M&M form, no less—it deserves a nod. Be warned, though, these limited-edition gems are sold exclusively at Target. If you happen to stumble across an elusive bag of them, we suggest snapping it up.
