Erica Turer has been obsessed with cats since childhood, which might explain her affinity for cat-centric stuff. When she’s not thrift diving for the next great find, Turer works as the marketing coordinator for Bogart’s.How would you describe your style? Peg Bundy meets The Golden Girls. Very 1980s-centric. A lot of sequins. Big, gaudy, horrible things that normal people wouldn’t wear. Floral patterns you would see on your grandma’s couch. Tapestries. Does the Peg Bundy fixation have anything to do with your hair? I’d love her anyway. But I do embrace my hair in my style. I would never ever dye it.You said you can go months without doing laundry. How much of your income do you spend on clothes? Not as much as I’d like. I have a few key pieces that I spent a lot of money on, but all my favorite items come from thrift stores, like my glow-in-the-dark Jurassic Park hat. You can find stuff that no one else will ever own. What’s your favorite thrift store? I used to love Village Thrift—rest in peace—but now that it’s closed, my favorite is a chain in Indianapolis called Value World. It’s full of gems. Any pro tips for thrifting? Go in without any idea of what you want. Just dig in. You’ll come out with the best pieces of clothing you could ever find. You have on two cat necklaces, a cat shirt, a cat ring, and a cat watch. A lot of my cat things are jewelry and accessories, but I’d say 15 to 20 percent of everything I own has a cat on it. I really wish that was a higher number; I’ll have to work on that. What’s your favorite cat-lady item? No question. My Jeffrey Campbell Cat Tapestry Litas. The greatest shoes in the world.Photograph by Jonathan WillisOriginally published in the October 2012 issue
